Okinawa '45: Death of the Yamato

7 April 1945 – The Japanese battleship Yamato under attack by U.S. Navy carrier aircraft in the East China Sea. A bomb explodes off her port side as fires rage near the aft 155mm turret. Yamato would sink hours later in one of the most dramatic naval battles of WW2. U.S. Navy photo L42-09.06.05, Naval History & Heritage Command – Public Domain
